Proud Stockist of:

Ireland's Complete Supplier of Bitumen Waterproofing Systems for Commercial and Residential Projects

Bitumen waterproofing has protected Irish buildings for decades, and modern modified bitumen systems continue to deliver reliable, cost-effective protection across countless applications. At QBM, we supply the full range of bituminous waterproofing products throughout Ireland, from torch-on membranes and self-adhesive systems to liquid-applied coatings and all necessary accessories. Whether you're working on a commercial flat roof in Dublin, basement waterproofing in Cork, or balcony refurbishment anywhere in between, we stock the materials and provide the technical support to get your project done right.

Our bitumen systems come in two main polymer modifications, each suited to different performance requirements. SBS elastomeric membranes offer excellent flexibility and cold-weather performance, making them ideal for Irish climate conditions where freeze-thaw cycles and substrate movement occur regularly. These rubber-like membranes provide superior crack-bridging capabilities, particularly important for timber substrates and movement-prone structures. APP plastomeric systems deliver exceptional heat resistance and higher softening points, perfect for accessible roofs, high-traffic areas, or surfaces with significant sun exposure. Both types integrate seamlessly with modern insulation layers and vapour control systems to meet current building regulations.

Installation flexibility matters for contractors working under different site conditions. We supply torch-on products for traditional rapid installation, self-adhesive systems for flame-free application in occupied buildings or sensitive environments, liquid-applied coatings for complex geometries and below-grade work, plus mechanically fixed and ballasted options for refurbishment projects. This range means you can select the installation method that best suits your project constraints, whether that's safety protocols, site access, substrate conditions, or installation team capabilities. Many contractors choose hybrid approaches, combining self-adhesive base sheets with torch-on cap sheets to balance installation safety with proven top-layer performance.

Complete waterproofing systems require more than just membranes. QBM stocks all the components needed for professional installation: vapour control layers with aluminium reinforcement, PIR insulation boards for thermal performance, heavy-duty cap sheets with mineral finishes, anti-root membranes for green roof applications, and comprehensive accessories including preformed corners, pipe collars, edge trims, primers, mastics, and drainage outlets. We work with leading manufacturers to provide materials suitable for flat roofing, basement tanking, car park decks, balconies, terraces, and below-grade structures. Our inventory covers everything from light-duty systems for basic applications through to premium products with extended warranties for demanding commercial projects.

Contact our technical team to discuss your specific waterproofing requirements. We'll help you select the right bitumen system based on your substrate type, application method preferences, performance standards, and budget parameters. With stock available for immediate dispatch and delivery throughout Ireland, QBM keeps your projects moving forward without delays. From single-layer felt replacements to complex multi-component systems, we supply the complete range of bituminous waterproofing solutions Irish contractors rely on.

What is the difference between SBS and APP modified bitumen membranes?

SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) modification creates elastomeric "rubberised" bitumen with excellent flexibility and cold weather performance, ideal for Irish climates where temperature fluctuations cause substrate movement. APP (atactic polypropylene) modification produces plastomeric bitumen with higher heat resistance and softening points, performing better in heat-exposed applications. SBS excels at crack bridging and low-temperature flexibility, whilst APP offers superior dimensional stability under thermal stress. Most Irish projects favour SBS for its elasticity, whilst APP suits applications requiring maximum heat resistance or accessible roof surfaces experiencing regular traffic and thermal loading.

Can bitumen waterproofing systems be used for basement applications?

Yes, bituminous waterproofing systems excel at basement and below-grade applications when properly specified. External tanking, applying waterproofing to the outside of basement walls before backfilling, provides optimal protection against groundwater and hydrostatic pressure. Bitumen thick coatings (both 1K and 2K formulations) work particularly well for these applications, applying by brush or trowel to concrete or masonry substrates. Protection boards over the waterproofing prevent damage during backfilling. The system must accommodate expected hydrostatic pressures and include proper drainage where applicable. Liquid-applied bitumen products handle complex geometries and details more easily than sheet membranes in below-grade environments.

How long do bitumen waterproofing membranes typically last?

High-quality polymer-modified bitumen membranes typically last 20-30 years or longer with minimal maintenance when properly installed and detailed. Premium systems with heavy-duty reinforcement can exceed 30 years. Service life depends on several factors: membrane quality and thickness, reinforcement type, exposure conditions, substrate stability, installation quality, and maintenance. Systems protected from UV exposure and mechanical damage (beneath paving or green roofs) often outlast exposed membranes. Regular inspections and prompt repair of any damage extend the lifespan significantly. Many manufacturers offer 10-20 year warranties on specific systems, though actual performance often exceeds warranted periods.

What preparation does the substrate require before bitumen membrane installation?

Substrates must be clean, dry, stable, and free from loose materials, dust, oils, or other contaminants that might prevent proper adhesion. Remove all debris, protruding nails, or mortar residues mechanically. Concrete surfaces should be fully cured, moisture-tested where appropriate, and primed with suitable bituminous primers to seal porosity and improve adhesion. Timber decks need secure boarding without movement, with boards properly fixed and joints supported. Fill cracks or depressions with appropriate materials before membrane application. Different substrate types require specific primers; consult manufacturer guidelines. Inadequate preparation remains a leading cause of waterproofing failure, so invest time in ensuring substrates meet specification requirements before membrane installation begins.

Are bitumen waterproofing systems suitable for green roof applications?

Yes, specialised anti-root bitumen membranes are specifically designed for green roof systems. These membranes contain additives that prevent root penetration without harming vegetation, tested to EN 1394 standards, confirming resistance to root growth, humic acids, and fertilisers commonly present in green roof environments. The bitumen layer sits beneath drainage layers, moisture retention mats, and growing media, providing reliable waterproofing that won't be compromised by plant roots. Once green roofs are established, accessing the waterproofing membrane for repairs becomes difficult, making the selection of appropriate root-resistant products essential. QBM supplies anti-root membranes suitable for both extensive sedum systems and more intensive planting designs across Ireland.
