The amount of light which enters the room via the light tunnels depends on the light intensity outside the building. The more light that illuminates the dome of the light tunnel, the more light is conveyed to the building interior. The below diagram illustrates the full amount of the daylight (lm) depending on the month and cloudiness measured at the light tunnel dome.

Which rooms are suitable for a light tunnel?
Light tunnels are commonly used in internal bathrooms, halls, corridors, stairwells, storage rooms and other spaces with limited access to vertical or roof windows. The room size, ceiling height and desired light level determine the number and size required.
How does a light tunnel transfer daylight?
A roof-mounted dome or glazed element collects daylight and directs it through a reflective rigid or flexible tube to a ceiling diffuser. Short, straight tube runs generally transmit more light than long or heavily angled routes.
Does the light output change during the year?
Yes. Output varies with cloud cover, season, roof orientation, shading and the position of the sun. Supplementary electric lighting may still be necessary, particularly during winter or at night.
Can a light tunnel pass around obstructions?
Flexible tubes and angled rigid sections can accommodate some roof and ceiling obstructions. Every bend and additional length reduces light transmission, so the route and maximum permitted length should be checked against the selected FAKRO system.
What maintenance is required?
The roof dome or glazing, flashing and ceiling diffuser should be periodically inspected and cleaned where required. Any signs of damage, condensation or water ingress should be investigated in accordance with the manufacturer’s maintenance guidance.
