Passive fire protection is about dividing a building into compartments – usually determined by floors and walls.The aim is to ensure that these compartments are fully separated and therefore slow the spread of fire and smoke, contain the fire at its origin and protect escape routes. Internal services such as waste, water and drainage create large cavities to pass plastic, flammable pipes through the building. Utilities create cavities in walls or floors to pass plastic, flammable pipes through the building. These cavities can compromise the compartments, enabling fire to spread more swiftly.
